Operational speed is overrated. Doing more of the same only faster does not create anything new. Strategic speed is about growth and seizing opportunities you know are there. Not next year. Now.
It’s the stuff you leave out that matters, so constantly look for things to leave out. To simplify. There’s no room for complexity. If you can’t make ideas simple to understand and implement, then don’t bother. Be the enemy of complexity.
There’s stuff you could do, stuff you want to do, and stuff you have to do. You need to be able to take an action that will substantively advance your business, and in effect, yourself as well.
Stand for something specific. A concrete goal understood by the entire team will win hearts and minds immediately. A massive strategy or planning document takes forever to build and only seconds to dismiss.
Silos are for farmers. To succeed you need to be highly integrated and interdependent. Growth requires teams working in sync. You need to talk. Simplicity comes from distilling ideas to meaningful actions.
Momentum fuels innovation. It keeps everyone motivated. If you and your team are not motivated by what you are doing, it will never go anywhere.
Try the new idea, the new system, the new innovation. If it doesn’t work, stop doing it. Create a new idea again. Rapidly.
A highly over-used word that has real meaning and relevancy to organizational growth. So does disruption. So does strategy. Use sparingly, and only when you mean it.
Now just happened. Its over. Best practices and benchmarking tell you what someone else just did. You need a line-of-site that moves forward, not backwards.
Consulting engagements should have a specific beginning, middle, and end point. The purpose should be actionable recommendations on the table quickly and efficiently. Not to generate a never-ending stream of business.
Success does not turn on the brilliance of one single leader. A truly brilliant leader makes it possible for the team to be brilliant together. Your strategy belongs to you. Embrace it, make it visible, and make it accessible. When something slows you down, shout it out, communicate it.
